Travellers wishing to visit the final frontier of Vietnam are required to obtain a special travel permit from the government. This may sound like a daunting proposition, but it is a simple and straight-forward process simply intended to safeguard the region from potential over-tourism and development.

More independent travellers can also visit the Ha Giang Immigration Office and obtain the permit themselves. This is located at 415a Tran Phu, just before Nguyen Thai Hoc merges with Tran Phu, opposite the cinema. The office is open every day from 8am to 8pm, but closed for lunch between 1pm and 1:30pm.



You will need to bring your passport, and if you are bringing a motorcycle, the registration plate number. The staff will then fill out the permit for you and ask for the VND210.000 fee and return your passport together with your permit.
